Hiking at Devil’s Slide Bunker

March 15, 2018
Category: things to do in san bruno

San Francisco, California, attracts millions of visitors each year and is considered one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. This city is thriving with culture, world-class dining, outdoor adventures, live entertainment, museums and breathtaking views. With majestic vistas, rolling hills and famous landmarks, San Francisco is home to dozens of attractions. For a unique hiking experience, set out to explore Devil’s Slide Bunker.

Devil’s Slide Bunker

The abandoned bunker at Devil’s Slide was originally in use during World War II as a military triangulation station and observation site as part of the Harbor Defense of San Francisco and is the last standing building of the original outpost. Before the use of radar, military personnel relied on compasses and binoculars to search for ships out at sea and to relay coordinates to a central post. By calculating information obtained from multiple observation posts, a ships precise location could be determined using triangulation. If enemy ships were spotted, communication posts would radio nearby gun posts to sink the ships before they got too close.

Unfortunately, as military technology progressed, the defense stations became obsolete. The Devil’s Slide site was abandoned in 1949, eventually purchased by a private owner in the 1970s and has been a tourist attraction since. The bunker now appears as if it is cautiously teetering on the summit of the cliff it sits on, and for those who dare enter, beautiful oceanside views await.

In addition to the Bunker, explore the surrounding area and hike the hillside, or enjoy a scenic drive along the infamous Highway 1. Don’t forget to stop by nearby Devil’s Slide Taproom – a modern family-owned bar that focuses on regional craft beers, local handpicked wines, and eclectic gourmet comfort foods.
